Medieval Florence - Attempts to Unify the town plan
In 1338 many city resolution began to prescribe modalities to be followed in reorganizing the buildings overlooking the Cathedral on the north side in the stretch between Via Buia (now dell'Oriuolo) and Via degli Spadai (now Martelli).
The arcading in rusticated ashlars on the ground floor of the houses was meant for warehouses or shops.
Commonly called forni (openings, perhaps from the Latin fornices), in their regular repetition these arches formed a sort of continuous loggia (the 'Fondamenta').
The windows on the first floor were all to open at a height of twelve braccia and to follow a design established by the Operai dell'Opera del Duomo.
